MODULE 3. Other Special Services

Module 3.1. Eyelash Extensions

3.1.1 Overview

Eyelash Extensions are a practice that enhances the length, thickness, and fullness of natural eyelashes. The extensions may consist of acrylic, silk faux, minx, or synthetic hair.

Methods of applying the extensions include full strips, clusters, and induvial, one-by-one extension.

3.1.2 Types of Eyelash Extensions

  1. Temporary(cluster) Lashes (also known as Wlashes)

These lashes are designed to be worn for a short period; 1-2 days. They can be made with a variety of materials and are not designed to be worn when showering, sleeping, or swimming. They are applied with lash glue designed specifically for temporary lashes.

2. Permanent/ Semi-Permanent Lashes

Also known as individual eyelash extensions are eyelashes applied with a stronger bond. Generally, a single lash is applied to each natural lash. When applied properly, neither the extension lashes, nor the glue should touch the eyelid. The bond is designed to last until the lashes naturally fall out, though the extensions may fall out faster if one uses oil-based eye makeup remover or rubs the eyes regularly. Permanent extensions usually last up to 3-4 weeks, however, maintenance is crucial. One should not rub their eye or not wear mascara. Instead, you should use oil-free make-up removal wipes, and eyelid cleanser and avoid rubbing around the eye area.

Eyelash extensions come in various types, lengths, colours, curves, and thicknesses from natural-looking to glamorous as well as dramatic. They come in three types of synthetic, silk, and mink lashes. These lashes further have different curls and are selected for clients according to their natural curl. They are J, B, C, and D curls. These lashes vary in thickness from 0.05mm to 0.25mm and in length they vary from 7/8mm to 16mm.

3.1.3 The Three Rules

The three most important rules for a perfect application are:

  1. Each extension is 1-2mm away from the base of the eyelid.
  2. Each extension is bonded at the base.
  3. Each extension is individually applied.
 3.1.4 Tools
  1. Glue
  • There are many types of glue in the market and their drying times and number of fumes may be different depending on the brand. The glue drying times vary, it could either be fast or slow.
  • It takes 24 hours for the glue to fully dry and set and it’s recommended that the client does not wet their lashes for the first 24 hours after applying the eyelash extension.
  • The glue can also have a rather toxic smell which creates fumes. The fumes result in sensitivity to the eye so make sure to use the little fan or air puffer to avoid the reaction of glue fume.
  • The shelf life if stored at room temperature is approximately 1 year UNOPENED. If stored in the fridge at a temperature of 13 C the shelf life can be from 12-15 months if unopened.
  1. Gel Remover (Debonder)

Debonder is thinning liquid that breaks the bonding of adhesive glue. The debonder contains a toxic chemical, if this chemical gets in contact with the eye, it will be very harmful.

  1. Primer (Makeup Remover)

Primer helps to remove the natural oil and mascara if there will be any makeup on the lashes- the adhesive glue will not bond perfectly on the natural lashes.

  1. Gel Pads

Gel pads are used to separate the bottom lashes of the client so that while doing the extensions we can save the under-eye area from tweezers.

  1. Medical Tape

Medical tape is to cover the lower lashes instead of gel pads and we can also use it to hold the deep and wrinkled skin around the eye.

  1. Tweezers

There are some basic tweezers:

  1. Straight tweezers
  2. Pro curved tweezers
  • Pro straight
  1. Strong-curved
  2. Straight A type

7. Glue Rings

It is used to rest your adhesive. It’s easier and more convenient to apply the eyelashes appropriately.

8. Disposable Mascara Wands

These wands are used to brush the lashes into place. It is recommended that clients use this tool to maintain their extensions.

9. Fan or Air Puffers

These are used to dry the adhesive and they can be also used to dry the natural lashes after cleaning with primer. Make sure you use the fan or puffer in a downwards motion so the glue fumes will not affect the eyes of clients and lash technicians as well.

3.1.5 Conducting the Patch Test

It is recommended that you conduct a patch test before treating the eyelash extension whilst completing a mandatory Eyelash consultation form.

3.1.6 Process of applying for Lash Extensions

It usually takes an hour to attach a full new set. An average person may take half an hour per eye. Eyelash extensions usually last around 3-4 weeks, after which the eyelash extensions start to fall out or cause thinning. Maintaining a full set of lashes will require a refill service approximately every 3-4 weeks.

Step 1: After cleaning the eye area, apply eye patches to the lower lashes to keep them out of the way while working on the client’s upper lid. This taping may feel a bit uncomfortable for the client but should not hurt.

Step 2: Please ensure to brush through the client’s natural lashes and choose the appropriate length of the lash extension and begin to apply them one at a time, adhering them to an individual natural lash using professional eyelash glue. Typically, the number of lashes used is around 100-150 lashes, so the appointment will take about 1 to 2 hours.

Step 3: After gluing the eyelash extensions, gently separate any extensions and natural lashes that may have stuck together.

Step 4: Once all the lashes are bonded to the natural lashes. You will allow the glue to dry. This process only takes a few minutes; this may be followed by a last round of separation.

Step 5: Then remove the patches that were placed on the lower lashes and discuss after-care instructions which include how long you can expect the new lashes to last and when the client may need to revisit for a refill.

Module 3.2. Lash Lift

3.2.1 Overview

Lash lifts are an innovative, yet low-maintenance lash-curling service that provides enhancement and definition without the same commitment as lash extensions.

  1. Check the eyelash length and pick a suitable Silicone Rod.
  2. Gently position the Silicon Rod on the upper eyelid.
  3. Apply a strip of eyelash glue on the front of the Silicone Rod.
  4. Use the Lash Lift tool to gently roll and place the lashes onto the Silicone Rod and hold for 10 to 15 seconds until it dries.

5. Gently separate lashes using the hook of the Lash Lift tool and makes sure the lashes are positioned correctly.

6. Apply Lash Lift lotion to allow the lashes to mould around the curling rod and wait for 7 to 8 minutes and clean it using a dry cotton pad.

7. Apply a Setting lotion that sets the lash shape and wait for another 7 to 8 minutes, and clean with warm water using a cotton pad.

8. Let lashes dry and brush them finally.
